First REFINERI session finished successfully

The first session of the platform for the development and support of hybrid AV creativity REFINERI ended on Sunday April 27, after five days and dozens of constructive working hours of the participants and tutors of the platform.

Seven projects selected at the recent call for proposals, and eight of their authors, were working from Wednesday April 23 with five tutors (Peter Kerekes, Lordan Zafranović, Guillaume Maupin, Željka Suková and Aleš Suk) on ideas for their future hybrid films. The Art-kino LAB – working ‘lab’ of the Art-kino Croatia – was the place were the inspirational lectures, screenings of inspirational films and masterclasses by Kerekes and Maupin were held, together with the exchange of many ideas and comments about the films of participants. Workings also conutinued in cafe Cukarikafe where One2One consultations and final evaluation were held.

Relaxation took place in evening screenings in Art-kino Croatia, with “Occupation in 26 Pictures” by Lordan Zafranović (in the presence of the author), then the masterclass and short and experimental films by the same author ( “Diary “, “Concert”, “Afternoon (Rifle) ” , “Antique” , “Waltz (My first dance)” , “Suburb (Ibis)” , “People ( in passing ), “Symphony of the heavenly city”) , then a documentary “Velvet terrorists” by Peter Kerekes, Pavol Pekarčík and Ivan Ostrochovsky, “66 seasons” by Peter Kerekes and “Water Music” by Guillaume Maupin.

In addition to the films, the platform also had a music program for public: Guillaume Maupin introduced himself as the Human Jukebox on Thursday at Korzo and on Saturday at Club Tunel where he held a concert, while on Thursday night at Club Život acoustic duo MišAndroid performed. With coffee breaks and snacks, participants were relaxing daily in Dnevni boravak cafe.

The first REFINERI session ended on Sunday April 27 with the evaluation of the five-day work. Platform will continue with work trough online and personal consultations, and also in two more sessions planned for this year. The second one is in July when the attendants of REFINERI will connect with an international workshop for the development of documentary film Ex Oriente Film that will move from Prague to Rijek to their summer session. The third session for 2014 is planned in November, when the production and post-production of films will be done, again in the Art-kino Croatia and again with the numerous programs opened to the public.

Organizer of the REFINERI is Association UKUS. The program was carried out with the support of HAVC (Croatian audiovisual Centre), City of Rijeka, Foundation Kultura Nova, the MEDIA Programme of the EU, in collaboration with the Art-kino Croatia and in partnership with the Institute of Documentary Film in Prague. Friends of the first REFINERI session are the Club Tunel and cafe Dnevni boravak.
