DOCUMENTARIES IN ART-KINO CROATIA

Tuesday, 21.07. 2015, 21.30, Art-kino Croatia: Jon Bang Carlsen films
Mačke u Rigi_malaCATS IN RIGA, Latvia, 2014, 15 min.

This view of the Latvian capital through cats’ eyes and ears adds a new perspective on news reports. The camera focuses not on the human population, but on the felines in Riga’s streets, houses and offices. While TV reports concentrate on the encroaching threat of Russia, the cats purr, sniff and yawn. There are cats in apartment blocks, government buildings and on the mayor’s conference table. There are hordes of silent witnesses all over the place, looking like they’re keeping a sharp eye on what’s going on around them. The only sound that interrupts the constant background TV noise and the hum of humanity comes when a musical cat parades on piano keys. We visit a cat exhibition and a pet salon, and attend a commemoration service and a political gathering, but scenes in which a mouse is found or a dog has to be avoided seem more important. From highly original camera angles we see a leaky shower providing a challenge to a thirsty cat, and a staircase transformed into a labyrinth. The everyday sound of footsteps is a mystery to the ears of a cat. This experimental ode to cathood plays with the notion of subjectivity, with the shift in perspective encouraging viewers to reflect on their own perception of reality.

Prava količina nasilja_malaJUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF VIOLENCE,  Denmark, Sweden, 2013, 83 min.

For many families in the sprawling suburbs of Los Angeles, an idyllic, peaceful middle-class existence is just a facade. What lies beneath is the unseen domestic turmoil: teens addicted to drugs, breaking the law and engaging in violent outbursts—and parents at their wits end. Interventionists, like Evan “Bullet” James and Dana “Hodges” Goller, specialize in entering these suburban homes in the night and ripping troubled teens from their beds to transport them, against their will, to a reform school in Utah. Just the Right Amount of Violence, crafted in John Bang Carlsen’s signature dramatized vérité style, combines elements of documentary and fictional interpretations to create an indelible and emotionally gripping portrait of families in crisis. Carlsen also inserts himself into the narrative, reflecting on his own troubled relationship with his father. Carlsen’s film overall seeks to highlight the tension between artifice and reality, where truth can be found.

Thursday, 23.07. 2015, 21.30, Art-kino Summer stage: Nino Kirtadzé film
Naftovod u susjedstvu_mala THE PIPELINE NEX DOOR, France, 2005,  90 min., free entrance

The oil pipeline that is being laid between the Caspian and Mediterranean Seas is of great geopolitical interest. It will be 1,110 miles long, 155 of which will run through Georgia, along Sakiré, a poor village with muddy roads and houses that the paint is flaking off of. Without interviews or voiceover, as an unnoticed bystander, director Nino Kirtadze films the villagers who, especially in the street, vehemently discuss this unexpected clash with world politics: the health risks, the governmental corruption, who actually owns the land, the possibility of an attack by Bin Laden and especially the level of financial compensation from BP, the oil company responsible for the pipeline. The filmmakers contrast the quiet valley and its village with noisy images of the construction of the advancing pipeline. Emotions get roused more and more: the elected village leader storms out of a chaotic meeting, where the resistance is led by the self-confident and self-appointed Leila. An equally chaotic court case against BP is lost, but the oil company grows tense, too: the filmmakers are in the car with the general manager of BP in Georgia and attend talks about the villagers’ objections. In the end, the general manager decides to pay a personal visit to the village.
